Oh, the delightful chaos of parenting—the ultimate adventure filled with twists, turns, and unexpected surprises at every corner. As I reflect on my journey through the magical realm of motherhood, I can't help but marvel at the beautiful, albeit chaotic, tapestry that is woven when tiny, wondrous beings enter our lives. We wove a second baby into the mix last spring and have been trying to confirm our family of four dynamics since. Only recently have I been feeling the flow, but that flow will change when childcare ends at the end of the month.
Therefore, what’s the next goal? I want to relish and cultivate the connection with my kids this summer. From the moment they entered this world, I shared a profound connection with my children—a connection that is both exhilarating and overwhelming in its depth and complexity. Yet, equally true is that despite sharing a body with them, they remain a bit mysterious, an enigma, if you will. Thus, each day brings new challenges, new joys, and new growth opportunities, both for them and for me.
Building upon this idea of connection, my advice to fellow parents is simple yet profound: trust your instincts and embrace the privilege of influencing your children's lives. Forget the rule books and the well-meaning advice of others—there's no one-size-fits-all approach to parenting. Instead, trust in your own intuition and savor every moment of this wild and wonderful ride. Similarly, when childcare centers forget that privilege and do not choose connection, be it with you or your child, you move on. I sensed this change last year and denied the urge from a sheer lack of energy, but this time, I am now rested and ready.
In my own journey, I've encountered moments of uncertainty, doubt, moments of triumph, and moments of pure, unadulterated magic. When we took our first camping trip as a family of four, waking up with both kids beside me was magic. From navigating the complexities of intervention services to grappling with childcare, each experience has shaped me and enriched my understanding of the world around me and my children.
As a working mom, I've faced my fair share of challenges and hard truths along the way. But it was during a recent trip to DC that I was confronted with a powerful realization—a realization that stirred a primal energy within me, akin to the adrenaline-fueled frenzy of what I like to call football energy. You know the dance: a player enters the field in a glided sprint. Their fists are clenched, and they push their arms toward the earth; sometimes, there is a high kick and always a very guttural woo hoo. Only my experience was out of body and without a stadium, likely very out of place. (Thanks again to the sage women who held space for me.) It was a moment of reckoning, a moment when I realized that it was time to forge a new path forward for myself and my children. When I tap into my knowing now, the message is to take these boys outside, play and relish the day. Therefore, I do with my words to comfort and encourage me.
So, as my contracts wind down and the summer beckons with its promise of adventure and discovery, I find myself embracing the spirit of spontaneity and resilience. Yes, there may be challenges ahead—uncertain school arrangements, endless waitlists, and a shortage of daycare options—but I won’t let fear or worry dictate or take away from the journey. Instead, I choose to embrace the magic of the life I've created and trust that everything will fall into place in due time.
